Two Steps Are Better Than One: Your Guide to Double Cleansing

What Is double cleansing?

In most cases, double cleansing is a simple two-step process that starts with an oil-based cleanser and is followed by a water-based cleanser. Originating in Germany, Japan and Korea, the double cleansing technique became popular as part of the Korean 10-step skincare regime.

How is the Tuel double cleanse different?

Formulated for your skin type, the Tuel Deep Pore Cleansing Duos will not only cleanse but nourish and exfoliate your skin thanks to some powerful botanicals and a two-step process that includes a deep cleanse and then a surface cleanse. Step 1 starts by using a nutrient-rich cleansing oil to dissolve trapped sebum and dead surface skin, going deep into your pores and drawing out more dirt than a regular cleanser. Step 2 uses an herbal toner that, when combined with the cleansing oil, becomes water-soluble to cleanse thoroughly and gently exfoliate—basically rinsing off any dead skin.

How often should you do it?

Morning and night will benefit your skin in different ways. Double cleansing in the morning will remove any oil and sweat your skin has produced overnight, along with any remaining products from your nighttime skincare routine. At night, double cleansing will remove all the makeup and grime that’s accumulated on your skin during the day, and will help other products penetrate your skin while you sleep. Generally speaking we only recommend double cleansing once a day, preferably in the evening.

What about over washing?

We agree, cleansing is a tricky balance; and while some water-based cleansers may be stripping to the skin or not as effective in eliminating dirt/debris, oil-based cleansers can be very beneficial. With the right ingredients such as oils replete with fatty acids, phospholipids or tocopherols, you are replenishing and balancing the skin while giving it a thorough cleanse.

How will it benefit your skin?

If the buildup of oil, dirt, dead skin cells, sunscreen, and cosmetic products can leave your skin looking dull, double cleansing aims to help you achieve your best-looking skin by eliminating all those things. After a few weeks, your skin should seem brighter, smoother, and overall healthier. Since your pores are clean and your skin gently exfoliated, you are increasing the efficacy of the serums, moisturizers, and masks you are using as part of your regular skincare routine.

How do you do it?

The double cleansing process is simple and really doesn’t add any additional time to your morning or nighttime skincare routine. When using the Tuel Cleansing Duos, add 5-6 pumps of the cleansing oil on dry skin on your face and neck with dry hands. Then massage 5-6 pumps of the herbal toner over the cleansing oil, adding cool water gradually to emulsify. Rinse until your skin feels clean.

Is double cleansing okay for acne or oily skin?

The truth is double cleansing works great for all skin types and conditions. Since the process will help make sure you are removing any impurities for the skin, your nighttime routine is the perfect time to use a cleansing duo formulated specifically for acne to ensure you gently cleanse the day away and prepare your skin for maximum absorption of skincare products.
