Let’s Bring Some Order to Your Skincare Routine

If you’re having trouble figuring out the correct order for your serums, moisturizers and essential oils, you’re not alone. Ask ten different people what they put on their face and in what order and you’re likely to get ten different answers. While it may seem seriously confusing, there is actually a right way to approach your skincare routine, and it’s easier than you think. Here’s how to make sense of it all and bring some order to your skincare routine morning and night.

Morning Skincare Routine: Five Quick + Easy Steps

While five steps might seem like a lot, this whole process shouldn’t take more than five to ten minutes, yet the benefits will make a difference for years to come. A good rule of thumb when applying your skincare products? Always apply thinnest to thickest, and don’t forget to finish with sunscreen before applying your makeup.

Step 1: Cleanse. Start by washing your face with a cleanser formulated for your skin type. One of our favorite methods? Double cleansing. It will clean pores by dissolving trapped sebum with a nutrient-rich cleansing oil, and then gently exfoliate and tighten pores with an herbal toner. There’s no better way to get your face ready to absorb the rest of your skincare products.

Step 2: Apply a Serum. Highly active and concentrated, serums are designed to improve skin tone, texture and overall health. Apply by patting a small amount on your face and neck with your fingertips and then smooth out. Resist the urge to rub your serums in like you would a moisturizer.

Step 3: Moisturize. No matter what your skin type, moisturizing is one of the most important steps you can take each day. Look for a product that hydrates, plumps, and nourishes dehydrated skin with all-natural ingredients.

Step 4: Add Eye Cream. The eyes are the first place we tend to show our age, and while adding eye cream to your skincare routine may seem like an extra step, it’s a very important one. Gently pat on a nutrient-rich eye cream designed to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles around your eyes. This will give your skin a firmer, tighter appearance while reducing puffiness. And don’t forget to add a bit of your eye cream around your mouth. A little will go a long way in helping reduce fine lines around your lips.

Step 5: Apply Sunscreen. Whatever you do, do NOT skip this step. In the morning, apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher—after your eye cream but before applying makeup.

Nighttime Skincare Routine: Four Steps + Essential Oil + Anti-Aging Treatment

The truth is, skincare magic really happens while we sleep. That’s why taking a little time to follow each step at night will truly leave you with glowing skin. Just think of it as your nightly self-care ritual.

Start by repeating Steps 1-4 from your morning skincare routine. Be sure to properly cleanse and remove all your makeup first. In the evening when you have a bit more time, be sure to add an essential oil to your nighttime skincare routine. Just think of essential oils as multivitamins for your skin. Properly formulated for certain skin types or issues, these concentrated oil blends will boost your skincare routine with targeted, all-natural plant nutrition. Best when applied before your serum (so step 2 at night), add 5-7 drops into moist hands and gently smooth onto your face and neck, avoiding the eye area. You can also use an essential oil in the morning just after you cleanse.

Switch Your Serum. Finally, because the skin’s blood flow increases during sleep, rebuilding collagen and repairing damage from UV exposure, switching out your serum to one with anti-aging benefits is ideal at night. Try a product rich in dual action peptides and vitamin C, both of which aid in the production of collagen and elastin to help firm, tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines.
